Edward L. Ayers – university president, author, historian and innovative educator – is a busy man.

But when the White House calls wanting to give you a medal, you make time.

Ayers with President Obama

In July, President Obama presented Ayers, president of the University of Richmond, with the 2012 National Humanities Medal in a ceremony in the White House’s East Room. He was recognized for his commitment to making American history widely accessible across a range of audiences, vehicles and media. He has been a leading innovator in classroom teaching, digital projects and radio programming, while writing four books and editing seven.

The latest is big even by Ayers’ standards.

“I am humbled by this award, for I have benefitted from the help of many allies at every step of the way,” Ayers said in a news release. “My goal is always the same, regardless of the medium: to include many voices, from the past and in the present, in every conversation.”

VIRGINIA SLIPS BUT STILL IS ONE OF THE TOP 5 STATES FOR BUSINESS

They got the slogan wrong: Virginia is, actually, for business.

Virginia tied for fifth (with Utah) in CNBC’s annual listing of America’s Top States for Business.images

Still, it was Virginia’s fifth Top-5 ranking in seven years. The state was No. 1 in 2007, 2009 and 2011. It was No. 3 in 2012.

A NIGHT OF FASHION FUN – FOR A CAUSE

Soon, Richmond’s “Mile of Style” will feel more like Sunset Boulevard.

Expect a glitzy gathering at Carytown’s Byrd Theatre on Thursday, Sept. 26, with limousines and a red carpet – even the paparazzi – for the first ever ctownfashion“Carytown Fashion Feeds the Byrd” show put on by the Carytown Merchants Association (CMA).

CMA president Raul Cantu, owner of Nacho Mama’s, says proceeds from the event will help restore and repair the Byrd, mostly unaltered in appearance and function since being built in 1928. He says it’s in dire need of up-to-date repairs.

Modeling the fashion show will be Carytown-based boutiques. Pink, Lex’s of Carytown, Champagne and Shoes, Indigo Clothing and West Coast Kix are a few attending.

For tickets to the event, visit carytownrva.org.
